There are a few high risk piercings that we feel ethically we cannot offer to the public, let‘s start off with discussing the “Bridge” piercing.
1) Bridge Piercing: This piercing is done at the top the ridge on the nose, in the center of the face, just the fatty part in between the base of the front of the brow. This piercing is very prone to migration and rejection and because of that it leaves a lot of scarring behind. Most anatomies do not allow for this piercing either and so we prefer to not offer it.
2) Ashley piercing: This piercing enters at the center of the bottom lip and exits where a lower labret would usually sit in the inside of the mouth. Because of the angle that the piercing is done at it can cause major damage to your teeth, gum, and bone structure. Migration and rejection are also a possibility, leaving your lower lip with a good amount of scar tissue.
3) Cheek/dimple piercings or Dahlia piercings: There are quite a lot of reasons why we don’t offer these piercings. Let’s start with the main reasons, the face is constructed with more than 20 muscles, with a bulk of them being located in the cheek. No one wants paralysis caused by damage to any muscle. A major concern is the saliva glands, the parotid gland has a duct that comes out in this area simple piercing area and the sublingual gland has a duct that exists right where a dahlia piercing would be placed. Because of these glands we do not offer these piercing because saliva leakage is a high possibility and can occur even after years of healed results. The second concern would be dental and gum health. The jewelry typically used for this piercing is a long barbell and with a 5mm ball on with side. Because the cheek swells so much we provide you with quite a long barbell and on occasion the can be bitten down on and cause damage. Thirdly the “sweet spot” for this piercing is not existent in all clients and is very anatomy dependent. Fourthly these piercing will close quickly if the jewelry is removed and can leave drastic scarring
4) These piercings are done through the frenum or frenulum inside the mouth. The smiley is pierced behind the labial frenulum and the Frowny is placed behind the lingual frenulum. These are rope like pieces of tissue connecting the gum to the lip. We do not offer these piercings due to the extensive damage they can and will eventually cause in the gum line and the bone structure of your teeth. Not to mention there is a high chance or migration and rejection in this area.
5) Clitoral piercing(not to be confused with a vertical or horizontal hood piercing) these piercings are placed through the clitoris. These are considered a high risk piercing because the clitoris I guaranteed to have nerve damage from preforming the piercing. We do not offer this piercing, but we most definitely offer a hood piercing.
6) Surface Bar Piercing: I do not offer surface bar piercings. I prefer to offer dermal piercings instead, the scarring is lesser once the body rejects the piercing compared to a surface bar piercing. There are quite a bit of risks that you can face with these piercings. These are considered temporary piercings and not permanent. Both sub dermal and surface piercings are notorious for rejection and migration, that being said it does not mean your piercing cannot last for a long time. There are limitations to where dermals can be placed, such as the hand, areas of the chest, or any other high movement area. There are so many factors that play into the longevity of your surface piercings, such as hormones, activity, dietary changes, pregnancy, change of lifestyle or body care products. I have personally had a dermal reject after 3 years when I became pregnant and yet I still have my facial dermal after 15 years without any issues. Everyone’s body is different and these can last any where from 3 months to years!
7) Finger Webbing: Piercings done in the finger webs of the hand are extremely high risk, because how are you to keep them clean? We touch everything with our hands and there is no way to properly keep these clear of bacteria. The finger webs are also a high movement are and prone to rejection.
8) Mandible Piercings: Absolute not a good idea! This piercing is newer to the piercing community and has not had a good rap sheet. These piercings are done at the base of the jaw under the chin line. Most piercers should not be doing this piercing and you as the client should not be considering it.
9) Snake Bites or Horizontal Tongue Piercings: This piercing is done at the tip of the tongue usually with a curved barbell. This piercing is going to destroy your front teeth and gums. Not to mention your tongue is a major muscle that once you put a piece of metal at the tip of the tongue the functionality of that muscle is effected. A standard tongue piercing is a great option and is always a better option.
